NOLAxNOLA is a five-year strong tradition of music at venues spread out around the city. Slide guitar player, Sonny Landreth, is from Lafayette, Louisiana. He began playing guitar when he was 12 years old and has been a member of Clifton Chenier’s music group, The Red Hot Louisiana Band, and a guest guitarist in Jimmy Buffet’s Coral Reefer Band. Landreth has held top 5 Billboard chart ratings on several of his recordings, and his album Recorded Live in Lafayette (2017) was nominated for a Grammy. His most recent album, Blacktop Run (2020), is ranked in the top 5 on Official Americana and Jazz and Blues album charts. The Friends of the Cabildo and New Orleans Jazz Museum are delighted to have him play in the third-floor Performance Center.

This documentary, produced by the Louisiana Architecture Foundation, features members of families who have passed down trade skills throughout generations. Imox Jazz is one of the most prominent jazz projects in Guatemala and Central America. Founded in 2004 by pianist Víctor Arriaza, this Guatemalan quartet—composed of Rosse Aguilar (saxophone and voice), Luis Pedro González (bass), and Kevin Escobar (drums)—has built a two-decade career and released five recordings that fuse elements of swing, Latin music, flamenco, and neo-soul with the essence of traditional Guatemalan music.
Their international reach has led them to represent Guatemala on important stages in Mexico, Central America, Colombia, and the United States. Their participation in the annual Jazz Education Network (JEN) conference stands out, where they have presented their fusion-driven approach to a global community of educators and artists. Throughout their career, the ensemble has collaborated with and shared the stage alongside world-class artists such as Erick Marienthal, Jason Marsalis, Andrea Motis, Luis Gasca, Dave Schroeder, and Marco Pignataro.
More than an ensemble, Imox is the epicenter of jazz in Guatemala. As founders of the Imox Jazz Institute and creators of #LosMartesSonDeJazz—the iconic jam sessions that, for more than 10 years, have nurtured the local scene—the group embodies a balance of technical excellence, educational innovation, and deep cultural identity that resonates on world music stages across the globe.
The name “Imox” comes from Mayan culture and refers to a Nawal, or guardian spirit, that connects a person with nature. It represents sensitivity, chaos, spontaneity, and the human will to create.

This event will be held in our Education Center. The Education Center is located on the first floor of the museum in the left wing.

Open from 1993 to 2010, Donna’s Bar and Grill, located at 800 North Rampart Street, was a true microcosm of New Orleans music and culture. For nearly eighteen years, musicians of all backgrounds and disciplines gathered nightly for community, camaraderie, collaboration, and education. At the heart of it all were Donna Poniatowski Sims, the club’s namesake and owner, and her husband, Charlie Sims. Together, they created an atmosphere that welcomed musicians, artists, neighborhood residents, visitors, and music lovers from around the world. With the foresight to document the people and moments that filled the club, Donna and Charlie captured a remarkable visual history of a pivotal period in New Orleans music.

The exhibition features photographs capturing musicians and patrons doing what Donna’s inspired them to do best: playing, connecting, celebrating, and enjoying themselves. Images of Troy Andrews, Shannon Powell, Kermit Ruffins, Doc Paulin, Uncle Lionel Batiste, and many others offer an intimate glimpse into the energy and creativity that made Donna’s such a special gathering place.

Through Donna and Charlie Sims’ photographs, visitors to the exhibition are invited to experience—and perhaps begin to understand—the joyful essence of this truly legendary New Orleans venue. Their photographs preserve not only the musicians who performed at Donna’s, but also the sense of community, spontaneity, and celebration that made the club unique.

Established in 2010, Composers Now has been uplifting the voice of living composers of every genre and medium through performances of opera, musical theater, vocal and orchestral ensembles, as well as dance.  The Dialogue Series, started in 2015, brings these working composers together with an audience to openly converse about what it means to compose and perform.
