This event has been postponed. New date to be determined. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please check nolajazzmuseum.org/events for more updates.

The New Orleans Jazz Museum presents New Orleans Wax Cylinder Recording Day, showcasing sound recording technology invented by Thomas Edison in 1877. Visitors will witness live bands being recorded using an authentic Edison phonograph. The recordings will then be played back, transporting visitors to the turn of the 20th century!

The day will conclude with a featured program entitled, “Waxing Bolden: Recreating the Lost Cylinder.” This program, featuring trumpeter Leroy Jones and his band, will recreate the “lost” recording of New Orleans’ legendary early jazz pioneer, Buddy Bolden. The existence of a Bolden cylinder has been lore for the better part of a century and remains the Holy Grail of early jazz artifacts. The Oscar Zahn phonograph, thought to be the machine that recorded Bolden, will be on display during the event!

This program is free and open to the public. Seats for “Waxing Buddy Bolden” (7:30 pm - 9:00 pm) are limited and require an RSVP.
