Trempo masterclass series

Brass band Masterclasses in New Orleans (United States) organized by TREMPO (France)

In the heart of New Orleans, cradle of brass bands and jazz marching bands, this training aims to develop instrumental technique as well as knowledge of traditional repertoires and oral tradition.

We want to allow musicians who play in brass bands, and brass bands at a professional level, to deepen their knowledge of instruments, their techniques, and to work on repertoires of tradition and oral transmission. The discovery of this music in their social and cultural environment will promote understanding and integration of modes of composition and arrangement. This training takes place in the heart of the historic district at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, which allows them to meet many of its musicians.

Professional musicians practicing the music of brass bands and jazz marching bands in New Orleans styles and having an advanced level. Knowledge of repertoires and regular group practice (walks or concerts) are required.

Artist Bio:

Sunny Side is a New Orleans-based jazz band inspired by the timeless sounds of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, and other early jazz legends. Blending rich 3-part harmonies, a tight rhythm section, and an electrifying vocalist/dancer, Sunny Side delivers an authentic and energetic New Orleans-style jazz experience.

In August of 2025, Sunny Side completed their fifth national tour, with over 20 performances in 16 cities across states including Tennessee, Ohio, and New York—appearing in a variety of venues from listening rooms to swing dance halls.

Since 2020, Sunny Side has been a sought-after choice for private events and weddings. Recognized for their professionalism and crowd-pleasing performances, they’ve earned The Knot’s “Best of Weddings” award in 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025—an honor reserved for the top 5% of wedding bands nationwide.

The Marigny Sessions - About the Album

Sunny Side began as the passion project of drummer and bandleader Rob Montgomery, who left his engineering job in 2017 to pursue music full-time. He joined a group of street musicians under the name “Sidewalk Swing,” focusing on traditional New Orleans jazz from the 1920s–40s, inspired by legends like Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, and Jelly Roll Morton. As the band progressed from street corners to clubs on Frenchmen Street, most members eventually moved on—except Rob. Determined to keep the spirit alive, he reformed the group with new musicians, emphasizing each musician to showcase their unique voice while allowing the music to evolve organically. In 2020, he renamed the band Sunny Side and self-recorded a live album just before the pandemic. By 2023, they expanded their repertoire to include artists like Nat King Cole, and released their first studio album, The Felicity Sessions, recorded at Felicity Church in New Orleans. Despite lineup changes, Rob kept the band’s core vision intact.

Their new album, The Marigny Sessions, continues on the theme from the previous album, expanding the influence into artists like Ray Charles, Benny Goodman, and Dr. John. It features an original composition, “The Fly” by guitarist Coyote Anderson, inspired by a William Blake poem.  Recorded at Marigny Studios following a 24-day tour in 2024, the project captures the tight chemistry of a road-tested group, enhanced by the spontaneity of guest pianist Andrew Huot. This album highlights each musician’s unique voice through a variety of jazz, swing, and soulful tunes the group hand selected.

Exhibit opening: The District- The Music and Musicians of Storyville

On Thursday, November 13, the New Orleans Jazz Museum will unveil its newest exhibition, The District: Music and Musicians in Storyville.

This immersive exhibition explores the vibrant musical culture that thrived in both Storyville and the neighboring area known as Black Storyville. Through a rich collection of photographs, artifacts, interviews, and video, The District examines the music and musicians who animated these legendary neighborhoods.

While the notion that jazz was born in Storyville is more myth than fact, there is no doubt that the district played a vital role in shaping the early sound of the genre. Music filled the cabarets, saloons, and brothels of Storyville and Black Storyville.

Visitors will encounter rare images of the music clubs and parlors where early jazz pioneers such as Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Tony Jackson, Kid Ory, and Fess Manetta performed. Among the highlights of the exhibition are two iconic artifacts from Lulu White’s Mahogany Hall—the long-awaited carriage stone and stained glass window—on view for the first time in many years.

A new video installation will bring the district to life through dynamic recreations of the dances that once accompanied this bold and transformative music. The Storyville Museum has also generously loaned several historic pieces, including the mantelpiece from Hilma Burt’s famed establishment, further illuminating the atmosphere of an era that shaped the course of American music.

Gallatin Street Fridays: Roy Bookbinder

The New Orleans Jazz Museum presents. Join us as we celebrate the artists that make New Orleans a world destination for music.

This program takes place inside our third-floor Performance Center, listening room. Admission is free and open to the public, seating is limited and offered first-come, first-serve.

Enjoy jazz music from home with the New Orleans Jazz Museum! Join the Jazz Museum online for our daily Live-Stream Concert Series, in which dynamic musicians perform live from the Jazz Museum! Tune in at 2 pm on facebook.com/nolajazzmuseum/live to watch for free.

Roy Book Binder has been rambling around the world for the past 45 years!   He gave up his Greenwich Village "pad"  in the early 1970's and lived in his "Tour Bus" for the next 15 years criss crossing the US and appearing at festivals  throughout Canada & Europe.

Book Binder, travelled with the legendary Rev. Gary Davis in the late 60's..... The Book, recorded his first solo acoustic Blues album in the 70's, which was the first to receive  5 stars in DOWNBEAT magazine!  In the  late 80's 'The Book' was part of Bonnie Raitt's  East Coast Tour, which included an appearance on The Grand Old Opry which led to almost 30 appearances on NASHVILLE NOW's, Ralph Emory Show!   In the 90's he often appeared  with JORMA KAUKONEN (who recorded 2 of Roy's songs)

THE GOOD BOOK, Roy's latest release of all original songs, reached #3 on AirPlayDirect's Americana charts!  #1 was Guy Clark & #2 was the late Townes Van Zandt.  Folkdj.org had Roy in the top 3 artists for July.

Roy has the goods: the original, the bare-knuckle, the low-down . . . blues. Who can say they were friends with the Rev. Gary Davis, Pink Anderson and Robert Lockwood? And toured with Arthur Big Boy Crudup, Hot Tuna, JJ Cale & Bonnie Raitt ?  Roy can. He has the stories, the licks, and the mystery of timeless music in his fingers. He’s been featured on a PBS special and interviewed by Terry Gross on “Fresh Air.”  He’s also a regular at Fur Peace Ranch, where he teaches along with Jorma Kaukonen. When he brings his  'Tour Bus'  to town, a one-man blues-fest ensues. He plays and he entertains, feeding us music and stories, and the evening is a celebration for us all. We’re privileged to have Roy here to preserve–and extend—the tradition of great American blues music.

Wesley Phillips

The Ultimate Sideman

Wesley was born and raised in New Orleans, LA and has been playing music for over 50 years. He began playing the bongos and the conga drum with the Desire Poets in 1972. He played for Mama Suma, Free Southern Theater, New Orleans Dance Co., and the Energy Funk Band.

Wesley joined the Southern University in New Orleans' jazz program and studied under Edward "Kidd" Jordan in 1976. Wesley performed with SUNO’s big band, jazz ensemble, and african percussion groups at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival through 1982. Kidd introdued Wesley to Sun Ra at the 1979 Jazz Fest. This began his tour with Sun Ra and his Solar Arkestra from 1979 to 1981, including the 1981 Chicago Jazz Fest on PBS. He later appeared with Sun Ra and his Cosmic Love Adventure Arkestra at music festivals from 1989 to 1991 in New Orleans, Birmingham, AL, and Jackson, MS.

In 1980, Wesley began his 16 years of playing gospel music on an album with Alvin Bridges and the Desire Community Choir. He played on four additional albums, and after many years at the Jazz Fest, the choir was invited to a three week tour of Italy.

In 1987, Wesley began his 10 year study of Afro-Brazilian culture with Curtis Pierre and Casa Samba. He has appeared in parades, festivals, theater, and television shows, presenting the folklore and celebrations of Brazil.

He was introduced to Senegalese culture by Abdoulaye "Papa" Camara in 1990 and have studied with former members of the Senegal National Ballet, including Abdoulaye Diaktaye- djembe; Souleman Diop- kutiro; and Mar Gueye- sabar. Wesley spent 15 years drumming at dance workshops with Papa, including conferences in Washington, DC; Oakland, CA; St. Louis, MO; Atlanta, GA; and Tallahasse, FL. He has performed as a member of the Free Spirit Drummers and Stiltwalkers; the Culu Children's and N'Kafu Traditional African Dance Companies; Sacred Dance Ministry; and Papa's own dance company, Alabatu. Wesley has instructed African drumming with children at summer camps, festivals and workshops in Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas.

In 1992, Wesley was recruited to join the FIYIYI Black Masking Indian group after playing the African bass drum on Mardi Gras Day. For the next 30 years, Wesley would play New Orleans' music with African drums with FIYIYI and the Mandingo Warriors. Performances included the Hopi, Navajo, and Yavapi Indian Reservations, the White House, and Paris, France.

In 2001, Wesley introduced his drum making workshop at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The drums made at the many festivals, schools, and day care center workshop help children develop patience and creativity while using recycled items. First Lady Laura Bush and a group of school kids have played on his drums at a New Orleans' Children Museum workshop.

In 2013, Wesley wrote and co-produced "Spirit of the Drum", a drummer's presentation of New Orleans' street rituals and celebrations. With Artistic Director Binta B. McDaniels as co-producer, Spirit of the Drums was presented at the West African Reseach Center in Dakar, Senegal. In 2017, the production debuted in the U. S. at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival as Kamau and the Spirit of the Drums. This was Wesley’s first festival appearance as a bandleader.

In 2018, Wesley co-authored the book “Fire in the Hole: The Spirit Work Of FIYIYI & The Mandingo Warriors. FIYIYI and the Mandingo Warriors appeared at book signings and panel discusions at events, including the Louisiana Book Festival in Baton Rouge, and the Tennessee Williams Book Festival in New Orleans.

In 2022, Wesley self- published “Mr. Drummer and the Cowrie Shell Hat”, a non-fiction story of a grandfather’s contributions as a cultural bearer. Using the book’s artifacts, costumes, and drums, Wesley developed an interactive storytelling presentation for kindergarden to 5th grade students

New Orleans’ VERY CHERRY is a genre-melting rave jazz symphony, blending EDM, classical, jazz, Latinx, hip hop, and other sounds from modern music into a heretofore-unheard experience that so consistently blows minds, their roadies have to carry a mop.

A multi-instrumental duo born from New Orleans' experimental jazz scene, Very Cherry pairs Simon Lott’s high-octane percussion with David Polk’s live saxophone, classical piano, and electric guitar, all layered over fully original, textural EDM compositions and beats. Building on 20 years of collaboration, “Context Killer” (Lott) and “Gahdlyke” (Polk) continue to evade the status quo with Very Cherry, their latest incarnation and most unique project yet.

Infinitely evolving in its dynamic blend of composition and improvisation, Very Cherry captures the original concept of jazz and reinvents it for the 21st century with the freshest sounds from around the globe. In the hands of two of New Orleans’ most innovative and technically-skilled musicians, disparate musical influences become an explosive tour de force of rapturous deep listening and booty-shaking bliss.

Artist Bio:

Naydja CoJoe is a talented smooth jazz singer whose substantial career led her to being recently named as the newest members of one of the legendary Dixie Cups. CoJoe was raised in New Orleans and began singing while part of a NORD (New Orleans Recreation Department) summer camp. She sang and played piano in high school, winning many competitions and awards, but family and work eventually took precedent. In 2001 she began backing up the charismatic Southern soulman Mel Waiters, touring for several years and cutting her road chops. She came back to New Orleans to her first French Quarter Fest, and had her “Aha” moment: she needed to be on one of those stages. She mentored with Michael “Soulman” Baptiste and Kermit Ruffins, and was soon engaging in her own gigs, covering soul and gospel, R&B, Billie Holiday and Gloria Estefan with her own band, the Lagniappe Section, or with Sharon Martin and Rechell Cook as the Ladies of Soul.

CoJoe’s career recently took a jump when she was invited to join the Dixie Cups, the legendary 1960s girl group that took the world by storm with hits like “Chapel of Love” and “Iko Iko.” The New Orleans trio also includes original Dixie Cup Barbara Ann Hawkins, Athelgra Neville Gabriel (a sister to The Neville Brothers), and now, CoJoe.

Join us for a special performance by Mexican-American vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer Amanda Ekery, whose work blends improvisatory jazz, research, and storytelling into music that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

Ekery is known for her bold and imaginative compositions, weaving narratives of culture, identity, and history into her music. Her projects have been supported by the Jerome Foundation, National Performance Network, and New Music USA, and featured at venues including the Kennedy Center, Panama Jazz Festival, and Portland Jazz Festival.

Beyond her celebrated recordings—including Keys With No Purpose and her whimsical Some Short Songs series—Ekery is a tireless advocate for gender equity in jazz. Nayo Jones (pronounced Nīyō) was born in Chicago, Illinois into a family of musicians and destined to be in show business. As an accomplished jazz musician and music educator, her father William “Doc” Jones groomed and nurtured her natural ability from a very young age. Nayo grew up listening to Jazz standards that proved to be a solid foundation and would later become a signature in her own show. Accomplished in her own right, Jones is also a classically trained flutist.

Currently Nayo is based in New Orleans, LA where she performs regularly with her band “The Nayo Jones Experience”. In addition to her own show, Ms. Jones also tours alongside New Orleans iconic jazz trumpeter, Kermit Ruffins as the featured vocalist and has toured with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra lead by Adonis Rose and is a featured vocalist on their album celebrating the famed Allen Toussaint with a beautiful rendition of Ruler of My Heart.

Nayo’s vocal range has been compared to the likes of Natalie Cole, Nancy Wilson, even Whitney Houston. She has been the opening act for legendary George Benson, Chris Botti, Rick Braun & Richard Elliot and more.

Nayo has performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, French Quarter Fest, Satchmo SummerFest  and many other Louisiana festivals annually since 2012. She has consistently drawn rave reviews for her performances. Nayo and her band, “The Nayo Jones Experience” has a  longstanding residency at the Carousel Lounge located in the historic Hotel Montelone and The Jazz Playhouse at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in the French Quarter. She has also performed at the Scottsdale Jazz Festival, Twin Cities Jazz Festival, Iowa City Jazz Festival and the Ascona, Switzerland Jazz Festival with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and more

Nayo’s body of work includes Nayo, My Name is Nayo Jones, A holiday album, The Nayo Jones Experience Live at the Kerr Cultural Center, and most recently her EP entitled With Love, Nayo Jones which is available on all music streaming platforms.
