8th Annual improvisations Gala
Storyville: Sounds of the Rising Sun
Step into Storyville at the New Orleans Jazz Museum’s 8th Annual Improvisations Gala presented by the Herb Alpert Foundation. One unforgettable night of nonstop revelry with music across five stages, burlesque, Baby Dolls, gaming tables, dazzling activations, food, cocktails, and an auction. This isn’t just another gala, it’s Storyville resurrected, and you won’t want to miss it.
This year’s Improvisations Gala celebrates the legendary Storyville, New Orleans’ most infamous neighborhood, where music, nightlife, and culture collided at the turn of the 20th century. Though best known as the city’s red-light district, Storyville was also pivotal to the New Orleans sound, where musicians like Jelly Roll Morton, Buddy Bolden, and King Oliver shaped and improvised to carry the music to new audiences.
For one night only, the Jazz Museum transforms into a living Storyville. Guests will experience multiple stages of live performances, burlesque, gaming, and interactive activities that blend the history of New Orleans with today’s vibrant music scene.

This camp is for players of all skill levels! Each attendee will have the option to rent a practice kit or bring their own practice pad or practice pad kit. There will be four one and a half hour sessions each day. Some of the topics we will cover will be several styles and beats that I believe you'll need to know when you are playing with people in the real world. Some of you may have encountered some of these grooves and may even feel comfortable with them already. If so, you can "check that" off your personal checklist. But, I'll also be demonstrating some embellishments and nuances that even the more advanced players can work on to enhance what they are already able to play. I will be sending PDFs in advance of the material that we will cover.
I will have specific topics to cover (TBD) but of course will be fielding any questions you may have on any other subjects you may want to cover.
Private Lessons will be available for an additional fee to be paid at the camp. To schedule your private lessons, please email Adam Kelly davidadamkelly@gmail.com
After you sign up, you will be redirected to a camp attendee information page with a form that should be filled out, some of my New Orleans suggestions and pdfs of some of the material we will be covering.

Join us for an engaging panel discussion exploring the history, myths, and legacy of Storyville, featuring four leading voices whose work has shaped how New Orleans understands its past.
Sally Asher is a local writer and photographer. She is the author of multiple books on the history of New Orleans. She has two master’s degrees from Tulane University in English and Liberal Arts (with a concentration in history). Her articles and fiction have appeared in over a dozen publications, and she won the New Orleans Press award for best feature reporting for her article on Storyville. She frequently lectures on New Orleans history through the Louisiana State Museum and has lectured, presented, and moderated panels for the Louisiana Book Festival, Downriver Festival, Bourbon Festival, and the Tennessee Williams Festival. Former president of Save Our Cemeteries, Asher is now a board member of the Preservation Resource Center and is the chair for the committee Save Our Cemeteries. She owns and operates Red Sash Tours that specializes in cemetery tours and has just launched a new podcast called Eat, Drink, and Be Buried, a podcast about New Orleans’ customs, culture, and curiosities.
John McCusker has been a photojournalist in New Orleans since 1983, working at the Times-Picayune and the New Orleans Advocate. McCusker was part of the team awarded the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for coverage of Hurricane Katrina, and he was named a fellow with the DART Society in 2009. He is the author of “Creole Trombone: Kid Ory and the Early Years of Jazz” (2012) and co-author of “Jockomo: The Native Roots of Mardi Gras Indians,” (2019) both published by the University Press of Mississippi. McCusker founded the Cradle of Jazz Tour in 1994 with a goal of protecting and marking structures associated with the birth of jazz in New Orleans. After leaving newspaper work in 2016, he worked as a volunteer for ToolBank USA, aiding in the recovery from Hurricanes Harvey and Michael. In 2019, John founded the 1811 Kid Ory Historic House, a museum telling the story of the 1811 slave rebellion and the early life of jazz pioneer Kid Ory.
Eric Seiferth is curator and historian at the Historic New Orleans Collection. He is the project lead on the NOLA Resistance initiative to preserve and share stories of the New Orleans Civil Rights Movement, and the associated exhibition The Trail They Blazed. He was also lead curator of the award-winning exhibitions Storyville: Madams and Music and Captive State: Louisiana and the Making of Mass Incarceration. He earned his BA and MA in American History from Tulane University.
Claus Sadlier is the President & CEO of the New Orleans Storyville Museum. A sixth-generation New Orleanian, Sadlier graduated from Brother Martin High School and the University of New Orleans before earning his MBA from Indiana University.
Sadlier moved to San Francisco in the early 1990s, where he launched a successful business career. He is best known for inventing and commercializing the world’s first insulated paper coffee cup, known as the Insulair Cup. Although Sadlier enjoyed his time in San Francisco, he left his heart in New Orleans, and he returned to his roots in 2013, making his residence in the French Quarter.
Wanting to bring the true story of Storyville to a wider audience, Sadlier devoted several years researching the historical narrative. While creating his vision for the Storyville Museum, he visited leading institutions around the world to study innovations in museum design, collected artifacts relevant and related to the city’s infamous Red Light Distritct, and assembled a team of local professionals to bring the museum’s vision to life. Located just two blocks from the historic Storyville district, the New Orleans Storyville Museum opened its doors to the public in August 2024, offering the public a unique immersive and educational experience.

Roy Book Binder has been rambling around the world for the past 45 years! He gave up his Greenwich Village "pad" in the early 1970's and lived in his "Tour Bus" for the next 15 years criss crossing the US and appearing at festivals throughout Canada & Europe.
Book Binder, travelled with the legendary Rev. Gary Davis in the late 60's..... The Book, recorded his first solo acoustic Blues album in the 70's, which was the first to receive 5 stars in DOWNBEAT magazine! In the late 80's 'The Book' was part of Bonnie Raitt's East Coast Tour, which included an appearance on The Grand Old Opry which led to almost 30 appearances on NASHVILLE NOW's, Ralph Emory Show! In the 90's he often appeared with JORMA KAUKONEN (who recorded 2 of Roy's songs)
THE GOOD BOOK, Roy's latest release of all original songs, reached #3 on AirPlayDirect's Americana charts! #1 was Guy Clark & #2 was the late Townes Van Zandt. Folkdj.org had Roy in the top 3 artists for July.
Roy has the goods: the original, the bare-knuckle, the low-down . . . blues. Who can say they were friends with the Rev. Gary Davis, Pink Anderson and Robert Lockwood? And toured with Arthur Big Boy Crudup, Hot Tuna, JJ Cale & Bonnie Raitt ? Roy can. He has the stories, the licks, and the mystery of timeless music in his fingers. He’s been featured on a PBS special and interviewed by Terry Gross on “Fresh Air.” He’s also a regular at Fur Peace Ranch, where he teaches along with Jorma Kaukonen. When he brings his 'Tour Bus' to town, a one-man blues-fest ensues. He plays and he entertains, feeding us music and stories, and the evening is a celebration for us all. We’re privileged to have Roy here to preserve–and extend—the tradition of great American blues music.
Exhibit opening: The District- The Music and Musicians of Storyville
Join us for an evening of celebration as we unveil The District: Music and Musicians in Storyville at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Enjoy drinks, light fare, and live music performances by Victor Campbell and Sam Kuslan, as we honor the sounds, stories, and spirit of the neighborhoods that helped give rise to jazz.
On Thursday, November 13, the New Orleans Jazz Museum will unveil its newest exhibition, The District: Music and Musicians in Storyville.
This immersive exhibition explores the vibrant musical culture that thrived in both Storyville and the neighboring area known as Black Storyville. Through a rich collection of photographs, artifacts, interviews, and video, The District examines the music and musicians who animated these legendary neighborhoods.
While the notion that jazz was born in Storyville is more myth than fact, there is no doubt that the district played a vital role in shaping the early sound of the genre. Music filled the cabarets, saloons, and brothels of Storyville and Black Storyville.
Visitors will encounter rare images of the music clubs and parlors where early jazz pioneers such as Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Tony Jackson, Kid Ory, and Fess Manetta performed. Among the highlights of the exhibition are two iconic artifacts from Lulu White’s Mahogany Hall—the long-awaited carriage stone and stained glass window—on view for the first time in many years.
A new video installation will bring the district to life through dynamic recreations of the dances that once accompanied this bold and transformative music. The Storyville Museum has also generously loaned several historic pieces, including the mantelpiece from Hilma Burt’s famed establishment, further illuminating the atmosphere of an era that shaped the course of American music.
The Sweetie Pies of New Orleans
The Sweetie Pies of New Orleans play a joyful mix of pre-war blues, traditional jazz, and jug band music. Known for their spirited live performances, they are a staple at venues like the Spotted Cat, DBA, and Snug Harbor and strive to preserve the city's rich musical traditions.
Becky Lynn Blanca (Vocal/Banjo), Russell Welch III (Guitar), Mike Voelker (Drums & Washboard), Jason Jurzak (Sousaphone/Bass/Vocal), Charlie Halloran (Trombone), Dave Boswell (Trumpet), Kris Tokarski (Piano)
“Harnanville?: New Orleans' Early Attempts at a Red-Light District” Presented by Sally Asher
“Harnanville?: New Orleans' Early Attempts at a Red-Light District”
Presented by Sally Asher
Before Storyville became synonymous with New Orleans’ vice and nightlife, the city experimented with an earlier—and largely forgotten—attempt to regulate prostitution. In 1892, the City Council passed an ordinance seeking to confine brothels to a designated district, require weekly medical examinations for prostitutes, and fund a new Charity Hospital wing for the “detainment and treatment” of women deemed diseased.
The proposal provoked fierce backlash and inspired an unlikely alliance between society women and sex workers, who joined forces to persuade the mayor to veto the measure. Though short-lived, this failed experiment—sometimes referred to as “Harnanville”—helped pave the way for the establishment of Storyville just five years later.
Join historian and author Sally Asher for a fascinating look at this early chapter in New Orleans’ social history, exploring how reform, resistance, and moral politics shaped the city’s approach to vice and public health.

Artist Bio:
Sunny Side is a New Orleans-based jazz band inspired by the timeless sounds of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, and other early jazz legends. Blending rich 3-part harmonies, a tight rhythm section, and an electrifying vocalist/dancer, Sunny Side delivers an authentic and energetic New Orleans-style jazz experience.
In August of 2025, Sunny Side completed their fifth national tour, with over 20 performances in 16 cities across states including Tennessee, Ohio, and New York—appearing in a variety of venues from listening rooms to swing dance halls.
Since 2020, Sunny Side has been a sought-after choice for private events and weddings. Recognized for their professionalism and crowd-pleasing performances, they’ve earned The Knot’s “Best of Weddings” award in 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025—an honor reserved for the top 5% of wedding bands nationwide.
The Marigny Sessions - About the Album
Sunny Side began as the passion project of drummer and bandleader Rob Montgomery, who left his engineering job in 2017 to pursue music full-time. He joined a group of street musicians under the name “Sidewalk Swing,” focusing on traditional New Orleans jazz from the 1920s–40s, inspired by legends like Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, and Jelly Roll Morton. As the band progressed from street corners to clubs on Frenchmen Street, most members eventually moved on—except Rob. Determined to keep the spirit alive, he reformed the group with new musicians, emphasizing each musician to showcase their unique voice while allowing the music to evolve organically. In 2020, he renamed the band Sunny Side and self-recorded a live album just before the pandemic. By 2023, they expanded their repertoire to include artists like Nat King Cole, and released their first studio album, The Felicity Sessions, recorded at Felicity Church in New Orleans. Despite lineup changes, Rob kept the band’s core vision intact.
Their new album, The Marigny Sessions, continues on the theme from the previous album, expanding the influence into artists like Ray Charles, Benny Goodman, and Dr. John. It features an original composition, “The Fly” by guitarist Coyote Anderson, inspired by a William Blake poem. Recorded at Marigny Studios following a 24-day tour in 2024, the project captures the tight chemistry of a road-tested group, enhanced by the spontaneity of guest pianist Andrew Huot. This album highlights each musician’s unique voice through a variety of jazz, swing, and soulful tunes the group hand selected.

New Orleans’ VERY CHERRY is a genre-melting rave jazz symphony, blending EDM, classical, jazz, Latinx, hip hop, and other sounds from modern music into a heretofore-unheard experience that so consistently blows minds, their roadies have to carry a mop.
A multi-instrumental duo born from New Orleans' experimental jazz scene, Very Cherry pairs Simon Lott’s high-octane percussion with David Polk’s live saxophone, classical piano, and electric guitar, all layered over fully original, textural EDM compositions and beats. Building on 20 years of collaboration, “Context Killer” (Lott) and “Gahdlyke” (Polk) continue to evade the status quo with Very Cherry, their latest incarnation and most unique project yet.
Infinitely evolving in its dynamic blend of composition and improvisation, Very Cherry captures the original concept of jazz and reinvents it for the 21st century with the freshest sounds from around the globe. In the hands of two of New Orleans’ most innovative and technically-skilled musicians, disparate musical influences become an explosive tour de force of rapturous deep listening and booty-shaking bliss.
