LUNA Fête is a revolutionary event, harnessing the dynamic energy behind New Orleans’s growing art, technology, and film communities, while utilizing iconic architecture as a canvas to present an original and imaginative new art form. For the second time, Sound Collage: A LUNA Fête Celebration of Light & Music will illuminate the grounds and gardens of the New Orleans Jazz Museum—transforming its historic architecture into a playground of light, art, and music.

This celebration features illuminated installations, digital sculptures, video-mapping projections, art animated by technology, and musical performances intended to engage and inspire.

DRUM CIRCLE — DARK MOON DESIGNS The Drum Circle facilitates bonds between people and music through art. Hitting each drum releases a distinct sound and brightly colored visual. This circle of bang-able art is there to help cause the ruckus! This piece continues Dark Moon Designs’s focus on incorporating community into art.

SOCIAL IMPROVISATIONS II — DERECK BREUCKNER Social Improvisations II features improvisational performances to an installation of live-feed video projections. Unusual projection screens and props, including modified headlamps and flashlights, mirrors, rolled-out paper, and translucent plastic sheets, are accompanied by a musical atmosphere. Audience members are welcome to enhance the performance with their own improvisations.

URBAN LIGHTS CONTACT — SCENOCOSME French artists Grégory Lasserre & Anaïs met den Ancxt lead the art collaboration, Scenocosme. This sound and light installation brings new life to human interaction. Touches and kisses become vibrant light displays with musical accompaniment when people connect over a shiny, small ball. If a person remains alone, nothing happens, but simple human interaction births fresh artistic expression.

TRICENTENNIAL BAND—BARRAINE FRANKS “Tricentennial Band” reinterprets New Orleans’s musical legacy through electrifying visuals. Interactive elements of this piece welcome observers to transform the piece’s instruments into their own musical performance. Barriane Franks’ work has exhibited locally at the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, as well as institutions like Purdue University, School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

NEW ORLEANS PHOTO ALLIANCE This photo exhibit by the New Orleans Photo Alliance focuses on the music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana. Featured photographers Zack Smith, Rick Olivier, Eric Waters, and David Rae Morris have each spent decades honing their craft. Having dug deep into their respective subjects, these photographers capture intimate perspectives on local culture.

Music performances mesh with visual art to make Sound Collage a true New Orleans music and art experience. Performers include:

MUSIC LINEUP

• 6-6:45pm: Kuwaisiana

  • KUWAISIANA Kuwaisiana bridges diverse local and global perspectives through dance-able, indie rock. With songs in Arabic and English, the New Orleans band combines elements from Louisiana and the Middle East. The band challenges American xenophobia with perspectives often left unrecognized.

• 7-8pm: Cole Williams Band & Josh Starkman

  • COLE WILLIAMS Cole Williams and her band will deliver the stories and rhythmic choices behind some of her stand-out songs like “Get High”, “Opposites Attract”, and the acclaimed “Free”. This will also be a celebration for the release of Cole’s retrospective album of 10 tracks that celebrates 10 years of solo performances and releases, The Punk Empress of African Rock - Testimony.

  • JOSH STARKMAN Guitarist Joshua Starkman’s infectious smile is all over his “Have a Great Day!” videos. The feel-good series features short collaborations between Starkman and diverse musicians such as Galactic drummer Stanton Moore, Mardi Gras Indian group Cha Wa, and rapper Dee-1. Starkman’s music leaves his audience brimming and full of positivity in a sometimes-turbulent world.

Sound Collage is free and open to the public, with food and drinks available to purchase on site.  

*Sound Collage formally concludes on Saturday, December 7 with the Jazz Museum’s inaugural Improvisations Gala fundraiser, 7:00pm to 11:00pm.
