ABOUT Cristina Kaminis is a Mexican American singer, newly arrived in New Orleans from NYC. Originally interested in pursuing jazz (after listening to one of the early Ella Fitzgerald albums) her vocal tone, texture and phrasing mixes both the vibrado of jazz singers of yore and the visceral emotion from Mexican singers of another era. Her original music doesn’t quite have one place to fit. It’s influenced by folk, blues, jazz and some good ole cry-in-your-tequila rancheras/boleros. In NYC she has been fronting the international jazz band, ‘Carte Blanche’ for 10 years as well as the salsa band ‘La Pachamambo‘ for half that time. As someone who has always enjoyed experimenting with accents and languages, Cristina sings in 7 languages and likes the idea of throwing a mixed bag of styles into her singing. Échale un poquito de todo al pozole.
