Stafford is beloved for his decades of work in jazz; in 1994, he became the leader of Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds, a group of which he’d himself been a member since the 1980s. Eventually, Stafford founded the Black Men of Labor, a civic organization focused on cultivating brass bands in New Orleans.
