The New Orleans Jazz Museum presents ELLIS, The first feature-length documentary about New Orleans pianist and educator, Ellis Marsalis Jr, produced and directed by Sascha Just, Freytag Productions, in collaboration with Elizabeth Kalos-Kaplan, on Wednesday, May 3rd at 6:30 PM CDT at the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old US Mint.
The evening will begin at 6:30 PM with a concert of Ellis’ music performed by musicians who used to play with Ellis headed by Jason Marsalis, followed by the ELLIS film screening at 8:00 PM. There will be a brief Q&A before the screening.
This program takes place outside in the Museum’s Third Floor Performance Venue. Seating is limited, so make sure to arrive early!
ELLIS
Patriarch of the famed “First Family of Jazz,” Ellis Marsalis was a master jazz pianist, composer and educator. This intimate documentary delves into the life and career of this music icon, interlaced with rare footage of key moments in US history, and footage of his final live performances. Anecdotes from sons Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo, Ellis III, Jason, and actor Wendell Pierce, round out the film as Ellis recounts for us the story of his illustrious life. – Karen McMullen
