Amanda Ekery at the New Orleans Jazz Museum
Thursday, October 9, 2025 | 2:00–3:00 PM
3rd Floor Performance Center | 400 Esplanade Ave., New Orleans, LA
Join us for a special performance by Mexican-American vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer Amanda Ekery, whose work blends improvisatory jazz, research, and storytelling into music that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
Ekery is known for her bold and imaginative compositions, weaving narratives of culture, identity, and history into her music. Her latest release, Árabe, explores the shared history between Syrian and Mexican communities on the El Paso border through 12 original songs paired with essays on food, immigration, entrepreneurship, and heritage. Her projects have been supported by the Jerome Foundation, National Performance Network, and New Music USA, and featured at venues including the Kennedy Center, Panama Jazz Festival, and Portland Jazz Festival.
Beyond her celebrated recordings—including Keys With No Purpose and her whimsical Some Short Songs series—Ekery is a tireless advocate for gender equity in jazz. She is the founder of El Paso Jazz Girls, a non-profit supporting young female musicians, and has been recognized with the Jazz Hero Award by the Jazz Journalists Association. Her research on women in jazz education has been presented internationally and informs both her teaching and community work.
Praised for her “vision and curiosity” (Hot House Jazz) and her “fresh harmonies and talent for communication” (MacArthur Fellow Ran Blake), Ekery’s performances invite audiences to reflect, imagine, and connect.
Don’t miss this one-hour performance by an artist shaping the future of jazz through innovation, scholarship, and fearless creativity.
