Jazz Funeral Secondlines + Protest: TAKING OVER THE STREETS juxtaposes the traditional practice of the Secondline in New Orleans against political protest in cities such as New York and Los Angeles.

Both the Secondline and the political protests illuminate the parallels of convergence and congregation of people in the street as public domain, in order to officiate cultural rites and proclaim civil rites. The images capture the people ‘taking over the streets’ in the Spirit of the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa known as the Nguzo Saba. The exhibition encourages inquiry into the history and culture of African American struggles for socio-economic equity and political justice from the Civil Rights era of the 1960’s to contemporary movements such as Black Lives Matter and the Take 'Em Down NOLA.
