In partnership with the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and the Musicians’ Council on Fair Wages Inc., the New Orleans Jazz Museum presents Prime Examples of Excellence in Music: Curated by Jesse McBride, a monthly performance series sponsored by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation.

Public gathering spaces are a vital asset to New Orleans, and the Prime Example Jazz Club was no exception. As one of the few remaining contemporary jazz clubs in New Orleans, the Prime Example was a champion of New Orleans jazz artists and an inclusive place that fostered a sense of community. It served as a creative center for young artists to learn the foundations of Black music, and it was one of the only venues for audiences to enjoy modern jazz on a consistent basis.

Prime Example Jazz Club opened in 2000 by owner Julius Kimbrough, Sr., a pharmacist-turned-venue owner.  Kimbrough created a space that featured both established and young musicians. In 2020, owner Julius Kimbrough, Sr. closed the bar and restaurant. To honor the enduring contributions of Julius Kimbrough, Sr. and the Prime Example Jazz Club, the New Orleans Jazz Museum will host a monthly concert series entitled Prime Examples of Excellence in Music.

Curated by accomplished composer, jazz pianist, and educator Jesse McBride, Prime Examples of Excellence in Music pays tribute to the legacy of the Prime Example Jazz Club. McBride will compose musical arrangements that feature up-and-coming contemporary jazz musicians performing alongside veteran artists.

Prime Examples of Excellence is Music is a monthly curated series, hosted on Thursday evenings from May through October. Guests are welcome to join the Jazz Museum in person for these free performances with the option to enjoy from home on Facebook Live. Dates include:

  • Thursday, May 20 at 5PM

  • Thursday, July 15, at 5PM

  • Thursday, August 19 at 5PM

  • Thursday, September 16 at 5PM
